Engineering ambassador in nepal

Descripción

Descripción THE ROLE
Street Child is calling for individuals hoping to gain valuable experience in the development sector by
undertaking a voluntary Engineering Ambassador role in Nepal. Street Child has identified that out of school
children is one of Nepal’s main development issues, particularly impacting children in marginalised
communities. Street Child is currently working on a series of projects in Nepal to rebuild schools and WASH
facilities in areas severely affected in the 2015 earthquake, to ensure all children in these areas have the
opportunity to access quality education in a safe and secure environment. This placement is a unique
opportunity to make a critical hands on contribution to enabling out of school children in Nepal, who have been
affected by a major natural disaster, to access a meaningful education.
Street Child offers placements of four to twelve weeks based at field sites, supporting our work in Nepal and the
work of our partner organisations. Working alongside the Street Child of Nepal team, key responsibilities will
include –
? Provide engineering and project management services, applying best practices, standards and
innovative technologies that comply with relevant standards and benchmarks.
? Coordinate with all stakeholders including government authorities, implementing partners, community
stakeholders, contractors and manufacturers from inception to completion of construction projects to
ensure alignment on project design and delivery.
? Conduct technical assessments of needs, selection of target communities and facilities to be
constructed through surveys, interviews and observational site visits.
? Contribute towards analysis of proposed projects with respect to technical feasibility and provide
appropriate recommendations to inform decisions.
? Assist with the preparation of bills of quantities, cost estimates and disbursement schedules within the
limits of allocated budgets.
? Assist with logistics and central, district and site levels ensuring proper and timely procurement and
delivery of materials.
? Contribute to the design and deliver training and support for engineers and technical supervisors, as
well as community stakeholders in safe and secure construction.
? Monitor project implementation and provide technical support to implementing partners to strictly
follow construction codes, ensure alignment with Government of Nepal standards, and assure
structurally sound delivery using standard checklists.

? Collect data and contribute to preparation of accurate and timely reporting on outputs to facilitate
consistency of information presented to stakeholders
This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about the development sector and disaster response through an
immersive experience, and to make a lasting contribution to the organisation and its aim to offer educational access
to out of school children all over the world.
THE ORGANISATION
Street Child started in 2008, with one location, 100 children and 4 social workers. Since then Street Child has
become a dynamic charity with an immense reach in Sierra Leone and Liberia, and has helped thousands of
children find a more positive life away from the streets and created educational opportunities for some 35,000
children. During the Ebola crisis, Street Child supported close to 18,500 orphans with humanitarian aid and
rehoming support. Through empowering children by giving them the chance to go to school – and giving their
families the wherewithal to keep them there – Street Child is one of the most impactful charities working in the
region today.
Nepal represents one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, ranked 145th occurring to the
UN Human Development Indicators. Following the devastating earthquakes in 2015, Street Child expanded its
operations into Nepal to assist local partners to re-establish education in some of the country’s worst affected
communities. The education sector was severely affected with 7000 schools completely destroyed or
significantly damaged and close to 31,000 classrooms completely destroyed. Throughout Nepal, approximately
1 million children were out of school as a direct result of the earthquake. Following the earthquake, Street Child
built 40 TLCs and is currently working alongside UNICEF and SPF to construct a further 180 school structures and
WASH facilities across some of the worst impacted areas in Nepal.
As an Ambassador, you will be part of an exciting stage of the organization’s growth, and will be working closely
with the Street Child of Nepal team and partner organizations to support the delivery of a series of projects
assisting some of the communities most affected by the earthquake and ensure these communities are more
resilient to future natural disasters.
