Descripción

Enterprise Volunteer Available Locations: Sierra Leone, Uganda Duration: 4-12 weeks Support Street Child in developing our social enterprises and family business programmes.

About Street Child: Street Child’s focus is on low-cost sustainable solutions that make a real difference to the children we support. Since 2008, we have helped over 200,000 children to go to school and learn and supported over 15,000 families to set up businesses so they can afford the cost of educating their children long-term. We recognise that the barriers to education are complex and interlinked, and our projects focus on a combination of education, child protection and livelihood support to address the social, economic and structural issues that underpin today’s education crisis. We work closely with our local partners to implement this change as we believe in the power and longevity of investing in local organisations.

Street Child Commercial was established in 2011 as a unique fundraising stream for Street Child in Sierra Leone. Our well established restaurant in Sierra Leone creates a sustainable source of income by turning profits which are then reinvested into projects.

Role: Street Child’s enterprise volunteer is an exciting opportunity for business-minded individuals with a keen interest in the development sector. Successful candidates will be working with our teams in-country across two projects - Street Child Commercial and Street Child’s family business schemes.

- In Sierra Leone volunteers will be working closely with our team on researching the expansion of our existing enterprise and supporting our family business scheme programme.

- In Uganda volunteers will be leading research into potential enterprise opportunities and working with our team in the initial stages of our family business scheme programmes.

Both require considerable initiative, project management skills and business acumen.

Qualifications:

- Market research or business management experience.

- Proactive and capable of work plan management with minimal support.

- Keen interest in social enterprise and international development.

- Professional and diligent in presentation and conduct.

- Flexible, adaptable and able to thrive in a startup environment.

- Thoughtful, resourceful, reflective, and eager to learn.

- Culturally responsive and respectful.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Terms: The successful applicant must be prepared to live and work in austere conditions when required, and to travel independently to urban, rural and remote project sites. The applicant must be able to manage his or her work plan, report regularly to the team on progress and will be considered a valued member of the team. A fundraising commitment will be required of the successful applicant, for which support will be provided by Street Child UK staff. Flights, visas, vaccinations and livings costs are at the applicant’s own expense and accommodation will be provided by Street Child at a fixed rate. A detailed breakdown will be provided for those applicants selected for interview. Whilst this is initially a voluntary role, for applicants with relevant experience who have the ability to add strategic value, there is potential to attain a more permanent position with the organisation.
