The work of Médicos del Mundo's in Mozambique began in 2000 with an emergency health care project targeted at the population affected by floods in the Matola District (Maputo province), which was subsequently extended to several districts of the province of Cabo Delgado. 15 years later, the organization continues to work in Matola mainly in the areas of Sexual and Reproductive Rights (SRR) and Gender Based Violence (GBV), following the strategic guidelines of the Ministries of Health (MISAU) and of Gender, Childhood and Social Action (MGCAS).
At present we are supporting a One-stop Center and a shelter for GBV survivors and we are working on the implementation of the monitoring and evaluation system of the Multisectorial Mechanism for the Assistance of GBV survivors, in collaboration with MGCAS and other ministries. All our projects are carried out by local organizations that albeit have a lot of experience in development projects implementation (especially in SRR and GBV and working with local population), but there is further need of key competences such as designing and managing development projects according to donors' requirements (e.g. Logical Framework, Oriented Result Management and budget monitoring).
Time control and framework coherence are finally ensured by the international staff, which can contribute with specialised knowledge in international cooperation. However, the international staff is too small (at present there’s only one expat in MDM Mozambique, with mainly general coordination tasks assigned) and doesn’t have enough time to contribute to training needs. Moreover, due to the nature of our partners, that are CBOs with some income generation potential (i.e., orchard, chicken farm, hairdresser, food catering, handcraft making, computer science lessons, etc.), they need to be better oriented to develop business plans including long-term and more strategic ones.
